Why Kundalini Yoga?

Most educated and well-settled individuals—especially in the United States—rarely explore practices like Kundalini Yoga. Many even wonder why an educated professional like me would devote time to writing a book on such a subject.

After all, isn’t Kundalini Yoga something reserved for monks and ascetics in India—those adorned with Rudraksha malas, matted hair, and ash-covered bodies, living far from the sophistication of modern society? For many, that image alone feels distant, outdated, or often even irrelevant.

But this perception couldn’t be further from the truth. Kundalini is not the property of saints—it is the vital life force that exists within every human being. Think of a string of lights hung on your deck during a celebration. When the current flows optimally, each bulb shines at its brightest. But when the voltage drops, the bulbs begin to flicker, dim, and eventually go out. Over time, a string filled with dim or dead bulbs is no longer useful—no matter how expensive or beautiful it once was.
In much the same way, many highly educated, successful individuals today are living as “flickering bulbs.” They appear functional on the outside—careers intact, families cared for, lives seemingly stable—but inside, their vitality has faded. Their energy, creativity, and enthusiasm are depleted. They exist, but they no longer glow.
Kundalini Yoga is designed to reawaken that inner power—to restore light to those who are merely surviving instead of thriving. Unfortunately, skepticism and misinformation have clouded its understanding, even in its birthplace, India.
My purpose in writing this book is three fold:

1-To reshape modern perception. I hope to help educated, discerning individuals—particularly in the West—see Kundalini Yoga not as an esoteric or mystical pursuit, but as a legitimate, scientific path to awakening human potential to its highest. It deserves the same recognition and respect if not more as Hatha, Raja, Vinyasa or Karma Yoga—terms that have already found their place in Western wellness culture. These forms of yoga have already secured a strong place in modern society and have effortlessly woven themselves into our daily lives unlike Kundalini yoga.
2-To make Kundalini accessible & contemporary. This book reintroduces Kundalini Yoga as a practical, modern discipline—free from dogma, ritual extremism, or outdated symbolism. It translates the essence of ancient Tantra into a form that can be safely and effectively practiced in daily life, serving as a textbook for inner transformation in the modern age. Because I believe true enlightenment doesn’t require matted hair or ashes—it requires awareness, energy, and the courage to turn your own light back on.
3-To restore Authenticity. Many practitioners and commentators have pointed out that Western interpretations of Kundalini Yoga often dilute or commercialize the practice—emphasizing quick energy “highs,” flashy branding, and superficial transformations rather than its traditional depth and discipline. Others express valid concerns about safety, noting that advanced energetic practices performed without proper guidance can lead to physical or emotional imbalance. Some even dismiss it as cult-like due to misinformation and misuse.

As an Indian American physician who was fortunate to be raised by a grandmother with authentic tantric knowledge, I offer a bridge between science and tradition. My cultural roots, combined with decades of personal tantric experience (guided by my grandmother whose pic is on right), and medical expertise, allowed me to bring clarity, safety, and authenticity to Kundalini practice—helping dispel the fears, flaws, and misconceptions currently surrounding it in the West.
